Classical Virtues
Our high school level literature courses will encourage students to engage with great books in a way that cultivates virtue in their own lives. Simply stated, virtue in moral excellence. In our literature courses, virtue will provide a framework for learning how to live a flourishing, successful life as ordained by God. Students will be asked to evaluate the actions and motivations of the characters by means of the seven virtues: prudence (wisdom), fortitude (courage), temperance (moderation), justice, faith, hope and love. Students will also learn to see and follow what happens when virtue is replaced by vice. A well-lived life is a virtuous life. Students will experience how reading great books is one of the most effective means to learn to live well. Writing assignments will include both free writing and long writing assignments.
